Ice safety tips: experts advise caution for winter activities on ice

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Winter activities on ice can be risky, as no ice is completely safe.

Before you head out, make sure to let someone else know where you’re going, and when you’ll be returning. Experts advise against going out on the ice alone.

“Just make sure that you’re going with somebody, utilizing the buddy system, making sure that if something does happen, someone can call 911 or attempt to help you,” said Fire Captain Colton Dall with the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.

Ice forms at different speeds on each body of water based on its size and depth. Even after it freezes, conditions will continue to shift as the weather changes, causing ice thickness to vary across a water body. If the ice looks unsafe, stay off it…
