The Cedar Rapids Police Department (CRPD) has expanded its use of automated license plate readers (ALPR) to support public safety and investigations. Over the past decade, ALPR technology has been used by CRPD to locate stolen vehicles, apprehend suspects, and assist in missing persons cases. The department recently installed 70 stationary ALPR units in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
CRPD states that it has policies for ALPR data usage. Data is stored for 30 days, and access is controlled and documented. The department discloses camera locations and provides a public portal with statistics on detections, hotlist hits, and searches. Data is released to the public every quarter…
