Williamsburg Girl Scout earns Gold Award for new flag disposal box at Brother’s Market

WILLIAMSBURG, Iowa — A Williamsburg Girl Scout has earned the organization’s highest honor after building a new flag disposal box to help community members retire worn or damaged American flags with respect.

Samantha Baumgartner received the Girl Scout Gold Award for designing, constructing and installing the new box, now located in front of the can shed at Brother’s Market in Williamsburg. She said her goal was to provide a more accessible and easier-to-maintain option for proper flag disposal.

“I wanted to build a new flag disposal box for the community of Williamsburg and beyond to use,” Baumgartner said. “This new disposal box is in a more convenient location, and it will be easier to maintain in the future.”…
