Cleanup continues along I-80 after massive chain-reaction crash near West Branch

WEST BRANCH, Iowa — Several days after a massive series of crashes on Interstate 80, car parts and debris remain scattered along a six-mile stretch of roadway as crews continue cleanup and recovery efforts, state transportation officials said.

The multi-vehicle collisions occurred Saturday amid rapidly deteriorating weather conditions. Snow, slick pavement and sharply reduced visibility contributed to at least 50 vehicles becoming involved in successive crashes, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Mitch Wood, District 6 maintenance manager for the Iowa DOT, said crews have been working systematically to clear hazards from the interstate. Their first priority, he said, is removing disabled vehicles and scattered parts from the roadway and shoulders to ensure traffic can move safely…
