Duane Arnold’s 200-ton generator rotor heads to New York for critical refurbishment

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Crews at the Duane Arnold Energy Center have reached a key milestone in efforts to restart Iowa’s only nuclear power plant.

Workers this week removed and lifted the facility’s generator rotor, a critical component weighing about 200 tons. The rotor is being transported by rail to GE Vernova’s service center in Schenectady, New York, where it will undergo refurbishment.

The development follows an October announcement by NextEra Energy outlining a major agreement with Google that set the stage for recommissioning the plant. Duane Arnold is expected to return to service by early 2029, providing electricity to Iowa and the regional power grid…
