Historian critical of University of Iowa agreement to house State Historical Society collection

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – The University of Iowa has agreed to take on part of the State Historical Society’s collection as the organization prepares to close its Centennial Building, but some historians say the arrangement falls short of preserving public access to Iowa’s historical records.

Mary Bennett, who worked at the state historical society for nearly 50 years, said the agreement is inadequate.

“This is them trying to clean up the mess they’ve created,” said Bennett, a retired historical society archivist who is leading efforts to keep the Centennial building open…
