CRPD says vendor fixed security issue involving downtown public safety cameras

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Cedar Rapids police say a configuration error by a third-party vendor briefly allowed unauthorized internet access to one or more of the city’s downtown public safety cameras, though officials stress no sensitive information was compromised.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department said it was notified Monday, Dec. 22, by Flock Safety, the vendor that manages the city’s point-tilt-zoom cameras, about a misconfiguration affecting a small number of devices. The city operates five of the cameras in the downtown area.

According to police, the issue involved a temporary settings error that made a troubleshooting interface accessible online without password protection. Flock Safety said the interface did not allow users to control the cameras, alter video footage or access the company’s cloud-based systems…
