IOWA CITY, Iowa — Police in Iowa City say a Des Moines man is facing multiple charges after allegedly ignoring police commands not to drive while impaired and later assaulting an officer during an early-morning arrest downtown.
According to an arrest report from the Iowa City Police Department, officers first encountered 28-year-old Elijah Alger of Des Moines around 1:15 a.m. Sunday while he was with his girlfriend and another male downtown. Police say all three showed signs of impairment and were advised to find an alternative way home as they approached a vehicle parked on the 100 block of South Linn Street.
Roughly 15 minutes later, officers report Alger and his girlfriend returned to the vehicle and drove away with the headlights off. A traffic stop was initiated around 1:30 a.m., and Alger was identified as the driver…
