Enjoy a Kid-Free Dining Experience at This Adults-Only Restaurant in Iowa

If there’s one thing Iowa is known for in its dining scene, it’s great family restaurants. So many of the Hawkeye State’s dining destinations have family-friendly food and even a few bonus attractions to keep the kids amused. But what are we to do when we need a night away from the kids? It turns out there’s a great adults-only restaurant in Iowa—and it happens to be located in the same spot as one of the best family restaurants in the state! Wildwood Smokehouse and Saloon, a popular barbecue joint, welcomes all ages, but on nights when it transforms into a unique live-music and entertainment venue, the kids have to go home. Same great food, none of the kids, and a wild and crazy atmosphere that’s the perfect place for the grownups to cut loose and enjoy a night straight out of the Wild West.

Located in a massive barn on the outskirts of Iowa City, Wildwood Smokehouse and Saloon feels like it could be located in some backwater Wild West town. That feeling continues when you step inside the cavernous restaurant, filled with quirky decor. It’s no surprise it’s popular with families during much of the day.

The other big draw? The fantastic barbecue. You can have a massive sandwich piled with the meat of your choice—or let the meat stand on its own with a platter accompanied by your choice of sides.

For most of the evening, the restaurant is open to customers of all ages, but when there’s a show that’s not designated “all ages,” the kids have to go home, and the fun begins for the adults. The live music continues into the night. Bands ranging from country to metal play at Wildwood, and the venue regularly hosts line-dancing nights, as well as performances that may take you by surprise, like bluegrass and stage shows.
