Survey reveals favored plan for Cedar Rapids School cuts, reorganization

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The Cedar Rapids School District released results from a district survey on three proposed models to reorganize the school district and close multiple buildings to address a budget shortfall.

The district is reviewing three options for consolidating buildings and closing up to 7 schools as it deals with a budget shortfall after years of declining enrollment. That’s after its initial proposal received heavy pushback for a lack of transparency around the discussion of other options.

Of the three plans, the intermediate plan consistently received the most support among staff and families in the district. That plan would shift fifth and 6th grade levels into separate intermediate buildings, while middle schools would house 7th and 8th grades. 60% of staff and 55% of families responded this was the plan they supported the most.
