University of Iowa Health Care settles $1.5M lawsuit over surgical error

University of Iowa Health Care has reached a six-figure settlement with a woman who experienced complications when a tube used to transport urine through the body was inadvertently cut.

Brenda Norman and UI Health reached a $1.5 million settlement to cover damages from a “prolonged recovery,” according to State of Iowa Appeal Board documents. Norman’s ureter, which carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder, was inadvertently severed during surgery at a UI Health Care hospital.

The settlement “avoids the risks” of a forthcoming jury trial, Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Peterzalek wrote to the appeal board.
