The Right to Fair Housing
Iowa ensures all people the lawful right to be considered:
- For the house of their choice,
- In the neighborhood of their choice,
- In the price range they can afford,
- And to receive fair, legal, and equal treatment and services in the terms and conditions of buying, renting, or borrowing.
Discrimination in Housing in Prohibited
The Iowa Civil Rights Act, Chapter 216 of the Code of Iowa, as amended, prohibits discrimination in housing because of a person’s race, national origin, color, mental or physical disability, creed, familial status (presence of children), sex, sexual orientation, religion, gender identity. The Civil Rights Act of 1866 prohibits discrimination in housing because of a person’s race or skin color in all circumstances.
