After fire, free meal site forced to temporary home

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A free meal program aimed at the homeless will open in a temporary home after a fire this week.

A dumpster fire early Tuesday morning forced Green Square Meals to close indefinitely, leaving more than 100 people without access to a free dinner. The fire broke out just before 2 a.m. behind the building in downtown Cedar Rapids. Firefighters are still investigating the cause.

On Thursday, the program announced it would resume its meal service in a temporary location on Monday inside Immaculate Conception Church in downtown Cedar Rapids, a few blocks away from its normal location. Meals would be served from 3:30pm-5:30pm on weekdays…
