UI Health Care opens expanded NICU space to serve more critically ill newborns

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital has opened a newly built neonatal intensive care unit to expand care for premature and critically ill newborns across the state.

The new unit, located on Level 7 of the children’s hospital, began welcoming patients Monday. Hospital officials said the expansion will allow the nationally ranked neonatology program to treat more high-risk infants as demand for specialized newborn care grows in Iowa.

Stead Family Children’s Hospital is home to the state’s only Level 4 NICU, the highest designation recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Level 4 units are equipped to provide the most advanced care for extremely premature and medically complex infants…
