Cuts narrowed to about 20 positions; Cedar Rapids school board to decide March 27

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Cedar Rapids school leaders are planning staffing cuts next school year as the Cedar Rapids Community School District works to close a $10 million budget gap while trying to protect student programs. District officials said the proposal is part of a larger realignment plan.

Mark Timmerman, a member of the Cedar Rapids Community School District, said the district is looking at where enrollment is growing and where it is not, and whether staffing needs to be shifted accordingly.

“Where are our schools filling up? Where are they not as full? Do we have to adjust where staff members are? Because we want to make sure we have the right number of teachers in the schools that have larger classes and so on,” Timmerman said…
