A New Bowling & Entertainment Venue is Coming to Iowa City

Students and families in Iowa City will have a new place to play, eat, & drink in the summer of 2026! According to an article from the Iowa City Downtown District, Barker’s Bowling is coming to the former SpareMe Bowl and Arcade!

What Happened to SpareMe?

Back in November of 2025, it was announced that SpareMe Bowl and Arcade would be closing its doors after five years in business. The closure was a shock to both customers and staff, including General Manager Heather Soseman, who had only found out about it the week prior to the announcement. The building has sat empty since November 26th, SpareMe’s final day in business.

Who Bought the Building?

On Friday (April 3rd), the Iowa City Downtown District revealed that a local business owner named Joe Hill had officially purchased the former SpareMe space, which is located inside the Chauncey Building at 404 E College Street. Joe Hill is also the owner of the restaurant Burger Haul at 112 E College Street.

What Will Barker’s Bowling Offer?

As the name suggests, the main draw of Barker’s will be bowling. The announcement from Downtown Iowa City says that the “revitalized” 16,000-square-foot venue will feature a total of 12 bowling lanes that will be split between the main level and the upper floor of the building, offering an “inclusive, all-ages experience.” The article reads:

“Both floors will offer full bar service alongside a diner-inspired food concept featuring burgers, pizza, appetizers, ice cream, and shakes, pairing classic comfort food with a lively, social atmosphere. Additional programming will introduce a dance floor and space for live entertainment with DJs and performances.”
