FIRST ALERT DAY: Timing and impacts of Tuesday’s severe storm

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The First Alert Storm Team has issued a First Alert Day today due to strong to severe storms that will move through Eastern Iowa this afternoon and evening. Scattered storms are likely to start developing at 3 PM. These storms will move west to east and continue through 9 PM. The storms that develop will likely quickly intensify to a severe level. Large to giant hail and tornadoes are the primary threats from these storms. There will likely be hail greater than 2 inches, but those north of I-80 could see hail greater than 3 inches. Tornadoes are also likely to form in these storms across all of eastern Iowa, with up to EF3-level strength possible.
