Iowa City Housing Authority to create a nonprofit following city approval

Following approval from the Iowa City City Council, the Iowa City Housing Authority has begun organizing a nonprofit, which will allow it the opportunity to leave its public housing plan and join a better funded housing program.

Tracy Hightshoe, the neighborhood and development services director for the Iowa City government, said, financially, organizing as a nonprofit is what the authority needs to continue operations, as they have lost money for the last five years.

“Our public housing has been chronically underfunded for several years,” Hightshoe said. “We’ve had a net loss of about $245,000 a year for those five years.”…
