A Valley woman says a visit to her younger brother’s grave at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery turned into a heartbreaking search after she couldn’t find his headstone, raising concerns about an ongoing construction project at the historic Phoenix cemetery.
Shirley Carpena said she visited the cemetery last Friday to leave flowers at her brother’s grave when she discovered the headstone was gone. The marker, which she said had been in place for more than a decade, appeared to be buried beneath dirt and gravel.
“I called my daughter, and I said, ‘I can’t find him,'” Carpena recalled. “I said, ‘I lost him once. I don’t want to lose him again after all these years finding him.'”…
