1 dead after driver crashes into cars stopped for flat tire on US 60 in Mesa

MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — A suspected impaired driver killed one person overnight Wednesday after crashing into two vehicles stopped on a Mesa freeway for a flat tire, authorities say.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says the crash happened around 1 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of the US 60 near Higley Road.

DPS says two vehicles were stopped on the right side of the freeway to change a flat tire. As they were about to leave, a third vehicle crashed into both cars. Troopers confirmed a woman died at the scene, and five others were treated for injuries.

Investigators suspect the at-fault driver was impaired at the time of the crash. That driver had non-life-threatening injuries, according to DPS.

Arizona’s Family crews saw three damaged vehicles on the side of the freeway, including a mangled black SUV in the gravel. Crime scene tape is covering a stretch of the freeway, with multiple DPS troopers blocking the area. Debris and evidence markers were littered around all three vehicles…
