A man was shot Tuesday by a Phoenix officer after authorities said the suspect fired a handgun at police from a backyard window at an apartment.

The suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries and will be booked into jail following his release from a hospital, police said. No one else was injured in the incident that occurred about 6:45 a.m. Feb. 13 near 19 th Avenue and Berridge Lane.

Officers responded to a call that reported a man was holding a woman against her will at gunpoint at the apartment. Police surrounded the apartment and began to call out to those inside, according to a release.

“While officers were giving commands, a man inside the apartment fired a handgun at officers from the backyard window. An officer returned fire,” the release stated.

“The man was then seen leaving the apartment and jumping over a block wall into the alley. Officers gave commands as the man ran down the alley. It was at this time a different officer fired his duty weapon, stopping the man’s actions.”
