Pro-Palestinian group reassembles at Arizona State University; no plans to camp out

Four days after a protest ended in 72 arrests, demonstrators gathered outside Arizona State University’s Old Main building in Tempe to continue their call for Palestinian liberation.

A rally of about 50 protesters gathered to decry the Israel-Hamas war. Waving Palestinian flags and holding signs calling for a cease-fire, the group, ranging from ASU students to passersby joining in on the cause, gathered near a bus stop on East University Drive while campus security and Tempe police officers remained stationed nearby.

Andy Fields, a sophomore at ASU, was among the crowd, calling for “justice and peace” in the Gaza Strip while condemning what he believed as “inaction” from ASU President Michael Crow.

“I’m just here to show my support,” Fields said. “You’ve got to stand up and fight for people who are suffering.”

“There are families, children being killed and (ASU) thinks it’s OK to keep funding this war,” Fields said. “It makes me not want to go to this school anymore.”

While protesters continued their march for Palestinian freedom in front of Old Main, a barricade surrounded the perimeter of the building, separating the rally from the building’s front entrance.
