Toddler shot, critically injured at south Phoenix home

A shooting believed to be accidental left a toddler with life-threatening injuries, Phoenix police said Saturday.

About 3:30 p.m., officers responded to a home near Seventh and Southern avenues, where a toddler was found with a gunshot wound, according to Sgt. Phil Krynsky.

The child was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but was expected to survive, Krynsky said.

“Preliminary information suggests the shooting was accidental and self-inflicted,” wrote Krynsky in an emailed statement.

Krynsky noted the scene of the shooting was chaotic, with numerous people in and out of the home. Detectives were assigned to investigate the shooting.

One person was in custody, but no arrests were made as of 6 p.m., according to Krynsky.

In 2024, at least 200 unintentional shootings by children occurred in the United States, resulting in 74 deaths and 128 injuries so far, according to Everytown research .
