In Chandler, Arizona, as the mercury climbs and the heat intensifies, the city has stepped up with a proactive approach to provide its residents some solace from the scorching temperatures. Beginning June 13, Chandler will transition to offering overnight heat relief services through September 12, no longer waiting for excessive heat warnings to trigger the initiative. According to the city’s announcement, the day respite center at AZCEND and eight cooling locations that opened on May 1 are now a part of a broader plan to battle the overwhelming heat.
For those needing an escape from the heat, lateness will not hinder their access. After checking in, individuals can secure their possessions and then receive transportation to the Chandler Senior Center, where a meal and a place to sleep are provided. Taking into account the severity of the situation, Riann Balch, Chandler’s community resources senior manager, emphasized the razor-thin line between excessive and extreme temperatures during the summer months, stating in a release, “We want to ensure those in need can sleep safely in a comfortable place for the night.”
Following an overnight stay, guests will be taken back to AZCEND at 5:30 a.m. for breakfast and the option to remain there during daytime hours. The facility offers air-conditioning, hydration, snacks, and rest, in addition to crucial services like restroom access, showers, and laundry facilities. Chandler’s online release also indicates that the Community Navigation Team is on the ground, ready to provide support and resources to those who need them most…
