Like a scene out of an apocalyptic movie, Phoenix disappeared in minutes last night. A fast-moving wall of dust—called a haboob—surged out ahead of thunderstorms, flipping day to night and dropping visibility to near zero.
On Monday, August 25, the dust wall bulldozed across the metro, forcing a full ground stop at Phoenix Sky Harbor, damaging part of a terminal roof, and knocking out power for tens of thousands at the peak as winds topped 60–70 mph. Flights stacked up, drivers crawled on blackout highways, and trees snapped across the Valley.
