Vacant Food City in Tempe approved for 400-unit housing complex

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Tempe City Council has recently adopted a development overlay for a project that includes constructing 400 new housing units at the site of a former Food City store.

During a meeting last week, the council approved a change to the zoning map for property located on the northwest corner of Apache Boulevard and Dorsey Lane that is expected to be home to a new mixed-use project.

Back in 2021, the city announced Tempe was going to spend $10 million to acquire the closed Food City store for a housing project intended to benefit low-to-moderate-income residents…
