Inspectors hit Scottsdale Italian restaurant with 5 health violations

Maricopa County health inspectors cited a metro Phoenix restaurant for five health violations during the week of Dec. 8. Violations included bare-hand contact with ice cubes for drinks, a dishwasher not sanitizing properly and a clogged sink with standing water.

A priority violation is a major violation that directly contributes to an increased risk of foodborne illness or injury. If listed in inspection reports, remedies implemented during the inspection are noted.

During the week of Dec. 8, inspectors visited more than 500 restaurants and other food-serving facilities in hospitals, senior homes and schools. About 90 restaurants received an “A” rating. See a sampling of the “A”-rated restaurants at the bottom of this article.

5 priority violations

EVO Restaurant,15507 N. Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale

  • A bartender grabbed a large ice cube with bare hands to make a drink. Bare hands should never touch ready-to-eat items like ice. The ice cube was discarded.
  • The bar’s dish machine had 0 ppm chlorine even after priming. Acceptable levels are 50 to 100 ppm. Staff agreed to sanitize glassware in the three-compartment sink or the kitchen dish machine until repairs are made.
  • Chopped kale, cooked beef, short rib and portioned lasagna were being stored above safe temperatures. Items were moved to proper refrigeration, and staff were reminded to keep foods below fill lines and use time control for lasagna.
  • Bottles of mixers were placed directly in ice used for beverages. Ice in contact with bottles was discarded, and bottles were removed. Ice used for cooling cannot be used in drinks.
  • A sink near the pizza station had standing water in the basin and would not drain at the time of inspection. The sink was wrapped in plastic to prevent use. Other sinks were available, but plumbing must be repaired before re-inspection.
