Bomb Scare Justice: Explosive Package Triggers Evacuation at Phoenix State Courts, Heroic Response Hailed

A suspicious package containing homemade explosive materials was received at the State Courts Building in downtown Phoenix this Monday, prompting a rapid and coordinated response from both local and federal public safety agencies, as well as court employees. Chief Justice Ann Scott Timmer extended her gratitude for the swift actions taken by all involved. “I am deeply grateful to the Court employees and first responders who acted quickly, calmly, and professionally in response to this incident,” Timmer said, recognizing the critical roles of those who ensured a safe resolution, according to an official statement.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety, Phoenix Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation were on scene to unite together their efforts and investigate the incident. The scare led to the evacuation of multiple buildings on the Capitol Mall, including the State Courts Building, which houses the Arizona Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, Div. One. In the wake of the events, Chief Justice Timmer remarked on the importance of security for judicial officers and court staff, saying, “This event is a sobering reminder that the security of judicial officers and court staff cannot be taken for granted,” as obtained by a court press release.

After the package was confirmed to be dangerous, diligent work from authorities ensured that no one was harmed. The State Courts Building, after being thoroughly cleared by responding agencies, was reopened for regular business hours the following Tuesday.
