Fry’s to pay $120,000 for allegedly refusing to provide ASL interpreter for deaf employee

PHOENIX, Arizona — Fry’s Food Stores agreed to pay a $120,000 settlement after a lawsuit alleged that the employer failed to provide adequate accommodations for a deaf employee, according to Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes’ office.

The lawsuit alleged that a deaf employee for Fry’s repeatedly asked for an American Sign Language interpreter and was denied this accommodation.

Instead of using an interpreter, Mayes’ office said the company “relied on ineffective means of communication — including lipreading, written notes, and having family members interpret staff trainings.”…
