Summerville Museum to host Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom and Culture

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) — The Summerville Museum and Research Center is hosting a Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom and Culture event on June 7, beginning at 2 p.m.

The event honors Juneteenth National Independence Day and celebrates the history, resilience and triumph of American freedom.

Organizers say the event will highlight the endurance of the African diaspora, who “survived, thrived, and continue to serve the world with vibrant culture.” Keynote speaker Robert Scarlett, museum historian and educator with Dorchester District Two, will focus on the history and significance of the original Juneteenth.

Attendees can also enjoy live performances, including songs, dances and poetry presented by students from Fort Dorchester High School and community performers. A cultural reception featuring light refreshments inspired by traditional Juneteenth culinary practices will also be offered…
