Mount Pleasant police sound alarm over illegal e-bikes amid summer break

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCSC) — As more children take to the streets on e-bikes this summer, Mount Pleasant police are urging parents to make sure the bikes they buy are actually legal.

Officers say they are seeing an increase in young riders throughout town, but many of the bikes they stop are not legally classified as e-bikes. Instead, police say many are considered mopeds, which come with additional legal requirements.

The department says a legal e-bike must have fully functioning pedals, a motor no larger than 750 watts, a top assisted speed of less than 20 miles per hour and a motor that stops when the rider stops pedaling. If a bike does not meet those standards, it is likely classified as a moped, requiring registration and a driver’s license to operate…
