‘It is infuriating’: College of Charleston planning to spend up to $5.2M to lease hotel rooms for students

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — The College of Charleston is planning to spend up to $5.2 million to lease hotel rooms for upperclassmen amid an ongoing housing shortage.

With an incoming freshman class of approximately 2,650 students, about 125 upperclassmen are now at risk of losing their on-campus housing and will be forced to dorm in one of four nearby hotels: Hilton Garden Inn Charleston Waterfront/Downtown, Courtyard by Marriott Charleston Waterfront, Residence Inn by Marriott and SpringHill Suites by Marriott. Students expected to reside at Rutledge Rivers Residence Hall or 20 Warren Place Apartments received notice.

This also comes at a time when the college has already been facing a housing shortage and has been trying to occupy space across the city, including the controversial ongoing negotiations of turning 106 Coming St. into a dormitory.
