Authorities provide boat safety tips after slew of Lake Moultire rescues over the weekend

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — What started as a typical summer afternoon on Lake Moultrie quickly turned dangerous Sunday as severe storms swept across the water, triggering five separate boating emergencies in just a matter of hours. Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Major Bobby Shuler said first responders were called to a series of incidents as storms moved across the lake, bringing high winds, heavy rain and rough water.

“We had severe storms roll in from two different directions, almost like a couple cells come in from two different directions and turn that lake into basically worse than the ocean,” Shuler said. “We had anywhere from four-foot to five-foot caps, white caps out on a lake.”

According to Shuler, deputies, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources officers and local fire departments all responded as calls for help started coming in from across the lake. One of the incidents involved a jet ski carrying two people. Shuler said the riders lost control in the rough conditions and were thrown into the water, leaving one hospitalized…
