BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — What started as a typical summer afternoon on Lake Moultrie quickly turned dangerous Sunday as severe storms swept across the water, triggering five separate boating emergencies in just a matter of hours. Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Major Bobby Shuler said first responders were called to a series of incidents as storms moved across the lake, bringing high winds, heavy rain and rough water.
“We had severe storms roll in from two different directions, almost like a couple cells come in from two different directions and turn that lake into basically worse than the ocean,” Shuler said. “We had anywhere from four-foot to five-foot caps, white caps out on a lake.”
According to Shuler, deputies, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources officers and local fire departments all responded as calls for help started coming in from across the lake.
