Christie Rainwater found in violation of multiple laws by state ethics commission

HANAHAN, S.C. (WCIV) — The South Carolina State Ethics Commission has ruled that Hanahan Mayor Christie Rainwater violated multiple state ethics laws through her participation in the 2022 sale of property on Yeamans Hall Road.

The transaction became the focus of an ethics complaint filed in September 2025 by developer C. Ray Wrenn. The complaint alleged Rainwater improperly participated in a real estate transaction involving Carolina One Real Estate, where she worked as a Realtor, and failed to recuse herself despite the firm’s financial interest in the deal.

The complaint centered on a closing document that was revised shortly before the Yeamans Hall Road transaction was completed. The amendment added Carolina One as a broker in the deal, resulting in the brokerage receiving a portion of a commission totaling $25,500.
