MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCSC) — Mount Pleasant town leaders are weighing an extension of a development moratorium set to expire next week in several historic Black settlement communities, including Ten Mile, Phillips and Hamlin Beach.
The proposed extension would pause large-scale development for two more years by prohibiting permits for more than four homes in those historic districts. During that period, town and county leaders would work to update zoning rules governing the amount, type, and location of development.
Two governments must align on zoning
Mayor Will Haynie said the process requires coordination between Mount Pleasant and Charleston County, which do not share the same zoning rules.
