Canopy or crosswalk? James Island intersection plan puts safety and trees at odds

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCSC) — A long‑planned intersection improvement project on James Island could soon move forward as Charleston County leaders consider changes aimed at improving safety while preserving the area’s iconic tree canopy.

Charleston County and the City of Charleston previously attempted to address safety concerns at the intersection of Central Park Road and Riverland Drive but reached an impasse before advancing the project. This effort began in March 2018 using funding from the 2016 transportation sales tax.

Officials were reportedly unable to overcome concerns about impacts to private property and the tree canopy. Over the years, the project has been scaled back to minimize those impacts while still providing meaningful safety improvements…
