Last known Charleston-printed Declaration of Independence returns home for exhibit

DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A rare, Charleston-printed copy of the Declaration of Independence has returned to the city where it was first published 250 years ago and is now on display at the Charleston Museum in honor of the nation’s semiquincentennial.

The historic document, printed in August 1776 by Peter Timothy, a prominent South Carolina printer, played a key role in spreading the news of American independence throughout the Lowcountry. Charleston, as one of the 13 original colonies, was at the forefront of the American Revolution, rallying support for the new nation’s cause.
