JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCSC) — Two Lowcountry settlement communities are headed to plead their case and officially get two historic sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
After years of research and advocacy, the South Carolina State Board of Review for the National Register of Historic Places will consider nominations for the Sol Legare School and the Scanlonville Cemetery at a meeting on Friday. The Gullah Geechee Heritage Preservation project and a grant for underserved communities have supported the research and nomination process.
“It’s been a tremendous undertaking that’s taken several years,” Chloe Stuber, senior planner with the city of Charleston and project manager for the Gullah Geechee Heritage Preservation, says. “It really speaks to the motivation behind the Gullah Geechee Heritage Preservation Project, which is that we have a tremendous amount of beautiful black history in the Lowcountry, in our area of South Carolina and beyond, but not enough people know that history.”…
