Demolition on hold for 1890s East Side chapel after secret permit sparks outcry

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — A demolition order for a 130-year-old church in Charleston’s East Side is on hold after city leaders stepped in, but preservationists warn the historic building may still be lost.

The former Emma Abbott Memorial Chapel, built in the 1890s, has stood at 52 Cooper Street for generations.

Five years ago, developers planned to renovate the former Mt. Sinai Holiness Church of Deliverance into six residences. Instead, preservationists say the building sat neglected, without basic weather protection, until structural engineers determined it was too far gone…
