Cheeky brings seafood to the historic district

Cheeky opened this week at 123 Meeting St., offering a new seafood option in downtown Charleston. The restaurant comes from the Neighborhood Dining Group (NDG), which is the team behind places like Husk, Marbled and Fin, Delaney Oyster House, The James and Minero. Cheeky offers a playful, expansive menu highlighting both local seafood as well as fish from waterways around the world.

While many recent Charleston restaurant openings have been located far from Broad Street, Cheeky is fully leaning into the historic district.

“The location being close to the Four Seasons was certainly appealing, as was our proximity to the Gibbes Art Museum, American Gardens and our sister property, Husk,” said Kenny Lyons, president of NDG. “We’ve always loved this area of town; it’s the cultural hub of Charleston and we feel it’s a great place to be. It’s convenient and central for the residents of Charleston as well as those visiting our great city.”

What the menu holds

“Seafood excites us because it works for any moment, whether it’s a special occasion, a casual weeknight or a bite at the bar,” said Executive Chef Gabriel Lindsey about Cheeky’s focus on fish. “Charleston is surrounded by incredible seafood, but it can start to feel a little too familiar. We want to bring a fresh, new look to the table.”

Originally from Amelia Island, Fla., Lindsey has cooked in Michelin-starred kitchens in New York City and most recently in California at Dudley Market in Venice Beach. Fresh seafood was front and center there, and he often prepared fish caught by the restaurant owner’s fishing fleet.
