CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — The city of Charleston is rewriting its zoning code for the first time since 1966.
Over the past few years, planning and zoning officials have been working on a new code set to make rules clearer and easier to understand. The zoning rewrite would also add a Low Elevation Overlay that would identify the lowest-lying, most flood-prone land. It would also consider pedestrian connectivity and traffic.
“This is 30 years-plus of the existing code with a bunch of stuff being added over the years,” Robert Summerfield, director of planning and preservation for the city of Charleston, says. “Some things being taken away. We like to call it a franking code because it’s just so many different parts.”…
