North Charleston man says the city’s flood mitigation damaged his home. His neighbors want to help.

NORTH CHARLESTON — One Wando Woods resident says years of persistent flooding have caused extensive damage to his property and he believes the city is to blame. Now, his neighbors are rallying behind him.

Dennis Connolly, 72, has lived in the neighborhood in the southwest corner of the city for his entire life. The home where he now lives has been in his family since the 1950s. The two-acre marsh front property backs up to the Ashley River.

He said he has been unable to fully enjoy his property over the last five years, claiming a city project in 2021 intended to alleviate flooding instead worsened the problem. As a result, his home has suffered $600,000 worth of damage. In 2023, he filed a lawsuit against the city that remains pending…
