Height of Courier Square Phase III project voted on

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A redevelopment project known as Courier Square Phase III took another step forward on Tuesday during a Charleston City Council meeting.

134 Columbus Street in Downtown Charleston was once home to the Post and Courier. The 3.7-acre property is slated to be transformed into what’s described as a “mixed-use neighborhood,” on the city council agenda.

“We’ve had more than 80 meetings with neighborhoods, with various stakeholders, with Historic Charleston and Preservation Society, with many meetings with planning staff and we’ve incorporated feedback from them, and we think it has really made for a stronger, better project,” said James Wilson with Womble Bond Dickinson. He spoke during city council on behalf of the project team.

City council considered a request to change the zoning of the site from Light Industrial to a Planned Unit Development, and to create a new height district which would all for buildings up to 12 stories high. A deferral was on the table but did not pass. Both items were then approved by council for first reading.
