A recognized Coast Guard Community is a selection “recognizing communities’ special efforts to celebrate the service and sacrifice of Coast Guard men and women,” the Coast Guard stated. Adm. Linda Fagan will present the honor to Greater Charleston.
Before and after the ceremony, free tours of the Coast Guard Cutter Stone (WMSL 758) will be available.
Cutter Stone is named after Elmer Stone, the first Coast Guard aviator, and is the largest and most technologically advanced Coast Guard ship in the white-hull cutter fleet.
Tour times will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on 196 Concord Street. IDs are required for tours.
Charleston will join a list of 32 Coast Guard communities with the designation.
