CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston Police Department (CPD) announced charges Thursday morning in connection with a deadly November 2023 crash on Riverland Drive.

Four people were killed and another person, Brittney Roper, was injured after their 2010 Cadillac SUV ran off the roadway and struck a tree, known as the “Widowmaker,” during the early morning hours of Nov. 18.

Roper, 26, was arrested Thursday morning and is being charged with four counts of felony driving under the influence. A judge denied her bond during a Thursday afternoon hearing, calling her a danger to drivers in the community based on a long history of traffic-related offenses.

“I am exceptionally concerned about what I have seen in your Department of Motor Vehicles tenured history. You have been involved with – including this accident – six accidents since 2017. It is alleged that in two of those you did not contribute to them, but they did still happen. You also have been convicted of disobeying a traffic signal, speeding, and simple possession of marijuana in the last 10 years,” the judge said.
