Everyday Hero: socks, sneakers and good Samaritans

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Class by class, the children are brought into this room in Dunston Elementary School, with volunteers ready to deliver something very special.

“We are giving out 500 pairs of shoes to all of the students in the school,” said Emilie Erickson with Samaritan’s Feet.

Five hundred sneakers, including socks with a tote bag with encouraging notes, all thanks to Samaritans Feet and the volunteers from Southeastern Freight who made it possible.

“It’s shocking to see even the ones next door like here at school. We’re in Charleston, and you don’t realize how many of these children here are wearing shoes that are hand-me-downs from siblings that are three years older than them or wearing the same pair of shoes that they wore for the last three years of their life,” Erickson said. “You don’t realize it’s all right next door to you.”

You can see the excitement through their smiles. All 500 pairs of sneakers were donated. Volunteers with Southeastern Freight sizing the kids up for their new shoes.
