Black Voters Matter hosts voter education campaign event

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- As the presidential primaries are inching closer, the Black Voters Matter organization is bringing together black voters and leaders, the faith community, and social justice advocates together to encourage the Charleston community to get to the polls.

It’s crunch time, as South Carolina is days away from the Democratic and Republican primaries, now being the first in the nation.

“That’s a huge change in the primary system and it was largely due to black voters,” event organizer, April Albright said.

Saturday, the community went into neighborhoods to talk to people about the importance of voting.

“We’re here to increase the voter engagement in our community and also spread a little news about the social climate of voting here in America,” young voter, Ne’Khia Ray said.

Several students, including Joshua Rashe, traveled from their out-of-state schools to come to the event.

“Us doing this, us walking the streets and us volunteering and helping people now more about voting and bringing people out, it’s a way to bring power to our people,” Rashe said.
