John L. Dart Library celebrates reopening with a ribbon cutting ceremony

CHARLESTON S.C. (WCBD)–The John L. Dart branch of the Charleston County library is reopening on Monday, after nearly two years of renovations.

The library was closed in October of 2022 for repair work and renovations as part of a 108.5-million-dollar referendum project that brought five new library branches to Charleston County and renovated existing branches.

The facility will have more space for visitors to work, play and learn. The facility will also have designated areas for kids, teens, and adults, fully furnished and decked out with new technology.

The project also renovated a mural of Cynthia Hurd, a Charleston County librarian and victim of the 2015 Charleston church shooting at Mother Emanuel. Staff said the mural is a small way to remember the woman who gave so much to Charleston County public libraries over her lifetime.

“Cynthia Graham Hurd was a beloved branch manager. She was one of the Emmanuel nine, and we celebrate all of the work she did here at the John Dart Library. She was a manager here for over twenty years. Many of you here knew her, were mentored by her, touched by her, and we continue her legacy to this day,” said Angela Craig, the executive director of Charleston County Library.
