Berkeley County receives $1 million for Mega Boat Landing in Moncks Corner

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) – A $1 million U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service grant was awarded to Berkeley County on Thursday by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) that will go towards a Mega Boat Landing project in the county.

The project is in partnership with Santee Cooper, and construction will occur at the former Atkins Boat Landing/Lions Beach site at 933 Broughton Road.

The property is approximately 14 acres on Lake Moultrie and is undergoing the following renovations, said Berkeley County.

  • Six new boat launch ramps with docks protected by a breakwater wall to assist in protecting from high winds.
  • Public swimming area
  • An event pavilion
  • Walking trail
  • Around 180 boat trailer parking spaces and passenger vehicle spaces
  • An outpost dock for the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office to respond to lake emergencies.

“County Council and I are incredibly grateful for this state grant and look forward to this project inching closer to wrapping up. We excitedly anticipate that special day in the near future when the County and Santee Cooper can offer the public an additional location to enjoy outdoor recreation, along with providing our other overly used boat landings some much-needed relief. Aside from local daily use, we are excited of the prospects to attract the largest freshwater fishing tournaments in the world to Berkeley County and our world-class fisheries,” said Johnny Cribb, Berkeley County Supervisor.
