Beloved Mount Pleasant sweetgrass basketmaker receives new stand

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD)- Eugene Gilliard, who lost his sweetgrass basket stand after a hit-and-run, now has a brand new one, after an outpouring of support from the community.

It’s amazing what can happen in 3 and a half hours when people come together.

“We all gotta learn to help one another,” Gilliard said.

With a handful of volunteers and a spirit of giving, Gilliard’s heartbreaking story finally has a happy ending.

Professional builders and other helpers met at 8 a.m. Saturday morning and got to work.

“I met a lot of these people out here and everybody’s nice and want to help. I just love it,” Gilliard’s cousin, Nakia Wigfall said.

Gilliard lost his sweetgrass basket stand after a hit-and-run wreck, and just 4 days after News 2 aired his story, he now has a brand-new stand.

The outpouring of support for Gilliard doesn’t surprise Mount Pleasant Mayor, Will Haynie.

Haynie said, “Two great things. One it’s just community spirit in general. The other is how we value our Gullah heritage in Mount Pleasant.”
